Marina and the Diamonds for Seventeen Magazine. By Emily Laurence
When Marina Diamandis, a.k.a. Marina and the Diamonds, stopped by the Seventeen office, we developed an instant girl crush. After all, she's the kind of girl who, after a guy broke her heart, didn't sit around moping and instead channeled her sadness into some seriously sassy songs. Check out what she had to say about the creation of her album (and her thoughts on what's next for that ex-boyfriend)!
Seventeen: What is the idea behind your album, Electra Heart?
Marina and the Diamonds: It’s mainly about love, but with a sense of humor. The songs are about when you’ve been screwed over a bit. Instead of writing depressing songs about heartbreak, these songs are pretty sarcastic.
17: The album centers around four different types of women. Who are they?
MD: There’s the home-wrecker, the prima donna, the teen idol – which is like an inside out Britney Spears – and the suburban Stepford Wife. I use those four archetypes to live out the songs.
17: Is there an archetype you relate to the most?
MD: I like the home-wrecker because it’s not really a nice thing to be and I like making that humorous. I suppose when you're hurt in love you try to imagine that the roles were reversed so at least by labeling yourself a home-wrecker, you step out of that weak and vulnerable character and become someone else.
17: How are you able to express your feelings on love and heartbreak in a light-hearted, humorous way?
MD: The first songs I wrote, “Starring Roles” and “Lies”, are a bit more cutting because I wrote them when I was really hurt. But halfway through the album, I started to get over it, so I started putting humor into the songs. I quite like dark humor. Everyone gets dumped and everyone gets hurt and there’s karma to love in regards to what you’ve done to other people. I was mean to boyfriends, so then it happens to me! And as for the beau who set the tone for my album, what he did to me will happen to him with someone else.
