The decisive moment came as temperatures plummeted, contrasting sharply with the previous forecasts. On March 16, the afternoon high was projected to be near 44 degrees, but as the night approached, the temperature was expected to drop to around 22 degrees, accompanied by a chance of snow showers.
This recent drop is not an isolated incident; it marks one of the largest temperature swings in Columbus history. The largest recorded plunge occurred in 1996, when temperatures fell from 68 degrees to 13 degrees in just 24 hours. Comparatively, the most recent major drop was on December 22, 2022, when temperatures fell from 43 degrees to minus 6 degrees.
Other significant temperature shifts in the past include a drop from 53 degrees to 0 degrees on February 11, 1981, and a fall from 47 degrees to minus 7 degrees on January 5, 2014. These historical events highlight the volatility of Columbus weather during late winter and early spring.
As the temperature continues to fluctuate, the forecast for March 17 indicates a high near 29 degrees, with a chance of flurries, while March 18 is expected to see a high near 40 degrees. By March 19, temperatures may rise to around 56 degrees, and further warming is anticipated with a high of 63 degrees on March 20.
Experts attribute these dramatic changes to the ongoing battle between two major air masses. Meteorologist Dave Mazza noted, “Our two biggest air masses are starting to fight it out this time of year,” underscoring the complexity of spring weather patterns.
