Damon Stoudamire Fired as Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball Coach
Damon Stoudamire was fired as the men’s basketball coach at Georgia Tech on March 8, 2026, after three seasons marked by struggles on the court.
During his tenure, Stoudamire compiled an overall record of 42-55, with a disappointing 19-39 record in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. This season, Georgia Tech finished last in the ACC with a record of 2-16, contributing to the decision to part ways with the coach.
The team’s struggles culminated in a 79-76 loss to Clemson, marking their 12th consecutive defeat. This season’s overall record stood at 11-20, further emphasizing the challenges faced under Stoudamire’s leadership.
Stoudamire’s contract was set to run through the 2027-28 season, and Georgia Tech will owe him just under $3 million following his dismissal. His first season included a notable upset of No. 7 Duke, but subsequent years did not yield similar success.
Greg Gary has been named the interim head coach following Stoudamire’s firing. Georgia Tech’s athletic director, Ryan Alpert, expressed gratitude towards Stoudamire, stating, “On behalf of Georgia Tech, I want to thank Damon for his commitment to the Institute, our men’s basketball program and, most importantly, our student-athletes.”
Alpert emphasized the importance of the basketball program within the Georgia Tech community, stating, “Georgia Tech men’s basketball has a proud history and is an important part of our athletics department and community.” He also noted the commitment to finding a coach who can build a championship-level program.
Stoudamire previously served as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics before his appointment at Georgia Tech. His coaching career includes a record of 71-77 over five seasons at Pacific from 2016 to 2021.
Since 2010, Georgia Tech has made just one NCAA Tournament appearance, highlighting the difficulties the program has faced in recent years. The decision to move on from Stoudamire reflects a desire to elevate the program’s competitiveness.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the search for a permanent head coach, but the focus will be on revitalizing the men’s basketball program at Georgia Tech.
