Darron Lee charged with first-degree murder
Darron Lee, a former NFL linebacker, has been charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo. The incident occurred in Hamilton County, Tennessee, where Perpétuo was found dead in a home on March 10, 2026.
Lee, 31, allegedly stabbed Perpétuo to death last month. Prosecutors have stated that he consulted ChatGPT regarding how to handle an unresponsive person before calling the police, which has raised significant concerns about the role of artificial intelligence in the case.
According to reports, blood was found throughout the residence, and Perpétuo suffered multiple types of trauma, including stab wounds and bruises. District Attorney Coty Wamp described the scene, stating, “Mr. Lee was in a home with a female (who) was, for lack of a better term, beaten to death.”
Lee reportedly waited approximately 12 hours before contacting authorities, during which time he expressed confusion and distress in a message, stating, “Don’t know what to do right now, fiancée did her crazy thing again and now she’s messed up… she stabbed herself, slit her eye? Idk but she isn’t waking up or responding, what do I do?”
Lee was selected as the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Jets and played three seasons with the team before joining the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills. His professional football career has now taken a drastic turn with these serious charges.
Following his arrest, Lee was held without bond after a judge’s order, and his case has been bound over to a grand jury. He is eligible for the death penalty, although it remains unclear whether prosecutors will pursue that option.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the evidence against Lee and the potential implications of AI in this tragic case. The investigation continues as the community and the legal system grapple with the implications of this incident.
