Global Entry Program Set to Resume
“As DHS continually evaluates measures it can take amidst the Democrats’ continued shutdown of the department, DHS will be reactivating Global Entry on March 11th at 5:00 AM ET,” stated a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This announcement comes after the Global Entry program was suspended on February 22, 2026, due to a partial government shutdown that affected various federal services.
Global Entry, designed to expedite the entry process for preapproved American citizens and lawful permanent residents, allows members to bypass standard passport-control lines. The program has been a significant time-saving benefit for frequent international travelers, with approximately 13 million members currently enrolled. Applicants for Global Entry pay a $120 application fee and must undergo background checks and interviews, with membership valid for up to five years.
The suspension of Global Entry drew criticism from both lawmakers and industry groups, who argued that it not only inconvenienced travelers but also compromised national security. “Global Entry is far more than a convenience, it is on the front line of national security,” remarked a representative from the US Travel Association. This sentiment reflects the broader concerns regarding the impact of the suspension on travel efficiency and safety.
The decision to suspend Global Entry was part of emergency measures implemented by DHS to conserve funding and personnel during the ongoing government shutdown, which had already lasted three weeks at the time of the announcement. The unusual decision to suspend Global Entry had been strongly criticized across the travel sector and by some lawmakers on Capitol Hill, highlighting the program’s importance to both travelers and the economy.
In addition to expedited entry, Global Entry members also enjoy access to TSA PreCheck lanes at airport security, further enhancing their travel experience. The program is funded by the application fees paid by members, which underscores its reliance on user participation for operational sustainability.
As the resumption date approaches, travelers are hopeful for a return to normalcy in the Global Entry process. However, DHS has not set a clear timeline for when normal operations will fully resume after funding is reinstated, leaving some uncertainties regarding the program’s future.
The suspension of Global Entry is coming to an end, marking a significant development for millions of travelers who rely on the program for efficient international travel. As the program resumes, officials and travelers alike will be watching closely to ensure that the necessary security measures and operational protocols are effectively reinstated.
