Destructive Tornadoes Hit Kankakee and Surrounding Areas
On Tuesday night, severe storms swept through Illinois and Northwest Indiana, resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals. The storms were part of a larger weather system that produced multiple tornadoes, including one confirmed near Wheatfield, Indiana, with peak winds reaching 110 mph, classified as EF-1 intensity.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is currently investigating multiple suspected tornadoes in areas near Kankakee, Aroma Park, and Lake Village. These tornadoes stemmed from a supercell that tracked from Pontiac, Illinois, to Wheatfield, Indiana, leaving a path of destruction approximately 45 to 50 miles long.
Lake Village experienced significant devastation, with reports indicating that the area was ‘decimated’ by the tornado. Kankakee County has declared a state of emergency due to the severity of the damage, which has also resulted in nine minor injuries reported across the county.
A tornado touched down near the Kankakee fairgrounds around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, continuing its destructive path northeast into Aroma Park. The storms caused extensive damage to the electrical system, leaving approximately 4,300 customers without power in Lake Village and surrounding areas.
Rob Churchill, a member of the Lake Township Volunteer Fire Department, described the scene as one of “total devastation,” noting that there were collapsed houses and livestock on the loose. He stated, “Pretty much anything you can imagine you’ve seen before on newscasts, on videos — it’s out there.” Residents have reported significant damage to their properties, with one Aroma Park resident lamenting, “We had a big barn. We also got a solar farm out here in the field, and it’s just demolished.”
The storms also produced exceptionally large hail, with one trained storm spotter in Kankakee reporting a hailstone measuring 6 inches in diameter, potentially setting a new Illinois record. Hailstones ranging from 2 to 4 inches in diameter were observed along the storm’s path from Pontiac to the Illinois-Indiana state line.
In response to the widespread storm impacts, the Kankakee School District announced that all schools would be closed on Wednesday. Sheriff Shannon Cothran urged the public to stay away from affected areas, stating, “We understand the human curiosity, but we ask that they also understand that their presence going out to be curious also hinders the response and mobility of the responders.” Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact number of tornadoes and their specific paths as the NWS continues its assessment.
