Entering a New Season
As the 2026 Formula 1 season kicks off, Lewis Hamilton is set to embark on his 20th year in the sport. The season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne marks a significant moment for the seven-time world champion, who is looking to turn the page after a challenging 2025 season with Ferrari.
In 2025, Hamilton struggled to find his footing, finishing the season without any podium finishes. This year, he has made changes to his team, with a new race engineer, Carlo Santi, taking over from Riccardo Adami. Hamilton expressed optimism about his preparations, stating, “I think we’re sharp, prepared and we know what we need to do.”
Qualifying Results
During qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix, Hamilton secured the seventh position, while his teammate Charles Leclerc qualified fourth. In contrast, George Russell of Mercedes clinched pole position, finishing 0.785 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.
Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya commented on Hamilton’s performance, saying, “He needs to find a way to beat Charles.” This highlights the competitive nature of the season and the challenges Hamilton faces in his quest for success.
Looking Ahead
Despite the hurdles, Hamilton remains hopeful about the season’s potential. He believes that if Mercedes can maintain their current performance, they could be in contention for the championship in just a few months. “If they have a few months of that, then the season’s done,” Hamilton remarked, indicating his confidence in the team’s capabilities.
As the season progresses, the focus will be on how Hamilton adapts to his new environment at Ferrari and whether he can reclaim his status as one of the top drivers in Formula 1. The upcoming races will be crucial in determining his trajectory for the remainder of the season.
