Key moments
On March 12, 2026, Lucid Motors unveiled its latest innovation, the Lunar robotaxi concept, during a press event in New York. This development comes as part of a strategic partnership with Uber Technologies, which will utilize Lucid’s Midsize electric vehicles (EVs) for its ride-hailing services.
The Lunar robotaxi is based on Lucid’s Midsize platform, which aims to combine efficiency with advanced technology. Lucid has confirmed that the new vehicle will be a part of a broader strategy to enhance urban mobility through electric solutions. The company also announced that the Lucid Cosmos, another Midsize model, is set to start at an accessible price point of under $50,000, making it competitive in the growing EV market.
Lucid’s ambitious plans include achieving an efficiency target of 4.5 miles per kilowatt-hour for at least one version of the Cosmos. This is part of a larger goal to produce a total of 30,000 vehicles in 2026, which includes the Gravity SUVs equipped with SAE Level 4 technology developed in collaboration with Nuro. The company delivered 15,841 vehicles in 2025, indicating a growing presence in the automotive sector.
In addition to the Cosmos, Lucid is also working on the Earth, the second midsize model, which is expected to follow approximately one year after the Cosmos. The production of the Cosmos is slated to begin at Lucid’s AMP-2 plant in Saudi Arabia by the end of 2026, showcasing the company’s commitment to expanding its manufacturing capabilities.
Lucid’s new Atlas drive unit, which features 30% fewer parts than its predecessor, the Zeus drive unit, is designed to reduce costs by 37%. This innovation is expected to enhance the overall efficiency of Lucid’s vehicle lineup. Furthermore, the Cosmos is engineered to achieve a drag coefficient lower than 0.22, a design choice that reflects the company’s focus on aerodynamics, as noted by Derek Jenkins, a representative from Lucid.
As part of its hybrid sales strategy, Lucid will combine direct-to-consumer sales with independent retail partners, a model that has been successful since entering the European market. Wackenhut, a key partner, will begin distributing and servicing Lucid’s entire vehicle range in Germany starting March 30, 2026, further expanding the brand’s reach.
Initial reactions to the announcement have been positive, with Lucid representatives emphasizing that “efficiency will remain the enabler” for their future developments. They also highlighted that the Cosmos can regain over 200 miles of range in just 14 minutes of DC fast charging, a significant advantage for potential customers.
Despite these advancements, details remain unconfirmed regarding further partnerships and the final battery capacity or range figures for the Cosmos. As Lucid continues to innovate and expand its offerings, the automotive industry will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold.
