“I always feel pretty vulnerable when I show work, but I felt very comfortable exposing everything to Sofia,” said Marc Jacobs, reflecting on his upcoming documentary directed by Sofia Coppola, titled ‘Marc by Sofia.’ This film marks Coppola’s first venture into non-fiction and aims to provide an intimate look at Jacobs’ creative process.
Scheduled for release in limited New York theaters on March 20, 2026, and nationwide on March 27, 2026, the documentary features 12 weeks of behind-the-scenes footage of Jacobs designing his Spring 2024 collection. The film has a runtime of 97 minutes and captures the essence of Jacobs’ artistry and enduring legacy.
Jacobs and Coppola share a long-standing friendship and professional collaboration that spans over 30 years, beginning at a Perry Ellis show in 1993. Their relationship deepened when Coppola modeled for Jacobs’ fall collection in 2000, marking a significant moment in both their careers.
“It was really a sincere, small project. It was really important for me to show Marc as a creative person in his process, and I was happy that he felt comfortable around me,” Coppola remarked about the documentary. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2025 and closed Doc Fortnight at MoMA, featuring Q&A sessions with both Jacobs and Coppola.
The companion book to the documentary spans 200 pages, filled with archival photography and conversations between the two creatives. This additional material aims to enhance the viewer’s understanding of Jacobs’ work and the collaborative spirit that defines his relationship with Coppola.
Jacobs expressed pride in being the subject of a Sofia Coppola film, stating, “I feel very proud to be a subject of a Sofia Coppola film. We had a really good time doing it.” The documentary promises to treat fashion not merely as a finished product but as a series of decisions, revisions, and instincts.
As anticipation builds for the film’s release, it is clear that ‘Marc by Sofia’ will not only celebrate Jacobs’ contributions to fashion but also highlight the deep bond between the designer and director.
