Mexico Triumphs Over Great Britain in World Baseball Classic Opener
In a commanding performance, Mexico won the opening game of Pool B at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, defeating Great Britain 8-2 at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas. This victory marks a strong start for Mexico, improving their tournament record to 1-0, while Great Britain falls to 0-1.
Mexico took an early lead in the second inning when Nacho Alvarez Jr. launched a solo home run, giving his team a 1-0 advantage. However, Great Britain responded in the sixth inning with a solo home run from Harry Ford, tying the game at 1-1. The contest remained tight until the eighth inning, when Jonathan Aranda hit a pivotal three-run home run, breaking the tie and propelling Mexico to a decisive lead.
Despite being outhit 8-6, Great Britain struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, stranding nine runners and finishing just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. This inefficiency proved costly as Mexico continued to build on their lead, ultimately scoring eight runs.
Javier Assad started on the mound for Mexico, delivering an impressive performance with 3.2 scoreless innings. Robert Garcia earned the victory after a scoreless seventh inning, while Andrés Muñoz closed the game, recording the final three outs in the ninth. The pitching staff’s effectiveness was a key factor in Mexico’s success.
Reflecting on the game, Javier Assad noted, “A lot has changed. I am learning more. I have been pitching more in the big leagues,” highlighting his growth as a player. Meanwhile, Bradley Marcelino emphasized the team’s mentality, stating, “Nameless and faceless. Us versus us. We execute. We are on the attack, no matter what.”
This game also marked a historic moment, being the first World Baseball Classic contest ever played in Texas. Mexico’s recent history in the tournament is notable, having reached the semifinals in the 2023 edition before falling to Japan, which adds to the significance of their strong start this year.
Looking ahead, Mexico will return to Pool B play on March 8 against Brazil at 8 p.m. ET, while Great Britain is set to face the United States on March 7 at 8 p.m. ET. Observers will be watching closely to see how both teams adjust following this opening match.
