“Michael gave everything in service to the people of Chicago, and we will never forget his courage and sacrifice,” said Annette Nance-Holt, reflecting on the tragic loss of firefighter Michael Altman.
Altman, a 32-year-old firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department, died from injuries sustained while battling a fire in Rogers Park on March 16, 2026. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m., when Altman fell through the first floor of a building that collapsed into the basement.
He was quickly transported to Stroger Hospital but was pronounced dead the following day, March 17, 2026. Altman, who had been with the department for nearly two years, was assigned to Truck 47 in the Edgewater neighborhood and was a fourth-generation firefighter.
Brandon Johnson, the mayor of Chicago, expressed his condolences, stating, “Today, the city of Chicago lost not only a firefighter, but lost a hero.” This sentiment was echoed by many in the community, who recognized Altman’s bravery and dedication.
Approximately 100 firefighters responded to the scene of the fire, which is currently under investigation to determine its cause. Fortunately, seven residents of the building were displaced but reported no injuries.
Ald. Maria Hadden emphasized the impact of Altman’s actions, saying, “His bravery and selflessness saved countless lives yesterday, and the people of Rogers Park are all grateful for Mike and the rest of the Chicago Fire Department.”
Altman leaves behind a young daughter and a pregnant wife, adding a personal dimension to the tragedy felt by the community.
As the investigation continues, the Chicago Fire Department and the city mourn the loss of a dedicated public servant. Ald. Jim Gardiner remarked, “It’s just a reminder of, these things unfortunately happen. I don’t think there’s anything anyone could’ve done.”
Michael Altman came from a family with a long history of service in the Chicago Fire Department, further highlighting the sacrifice made by those who serve in this profession.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the ongoing investigation into the fire, but the legacy of Altman’s courage will undoubtedly endure in the hearts of those he served.
