Oksana Masters Achieves Historic Milestone
Oksana Masters has made headlines by winning her 20th Paralympic medal at the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan Cortina, Italy. This achievement comes as she clinched the gold medal in the women’s sprint sitting discipline in Para biathlon.
This victory marks Masters’ sixth gold medal in the Winter Paralympics, further solidifying her status as the most decorated American Winter Paralympian of all time. With a total of 15 medals in the Winter Games and five in the Summer Games, her accomplishments are a testament to her dedication and resilience.
Leading up to the Games, Masters faced significant challenges, including a surgery, a bone infection, and a concussion. Despite these hurdles, she has shown remarkable determination, having competed in every Paralympics since 2012.
In a stunning performance, Masters finished 16 seconds ahead of her teammate Kendall Gretsch, who secured the silver medal in the same event. Gretsch expressed her excitement, stating, “It’s always so exciting to be on a podium with your teammate. Oksana and I have been training together for years now, we spend a lot of time together.”
Masters, who was born in Ukraine and underwent amputations of both legs at a young age, has become a strong advocate for the Paralympic Movement. She reflected on her journey, saying, “Oh my gosh, my emotions are just pure shock. I did not expect this. All I was hoping was just to have a good time in the shooting range.”
She emphasized the significance of her medals, stating, “Every single medal is just as important because it has a different journey and path to getting it and achieving it. It means something special, this one.”
Masters made history at the Beijing 2022 Paralympics by becoming the first American to win seven medals in seven events at a single Paralympics, showcasing her exceptional talent and commitment to her sport.
As the Paralympic community celebrates her latest achievement, Masters continues to inspire many athletes with disabilities, advocating for recognition and support. Her journey is a powerful reminder of perseverance and the importance of representation in sports.
