Upcoming Elections for SGA
The Student Government Association (SGA) at CU Denver is preparing for elections for the fall 2026 term, which are set to take place this spring. SGA, composed of approximately 20 elected student members across five committees, plays a crucial role in representing the interests of CU Denver students.
Members of the SGA serve one academic year and are compensated for their contributions. In 2025, the SGA successfully supported the passage of a Mental Health and Wellbeing Fee, reflecting its commitment to addressing student needs.
Student Government Day at the State Capitol
On March 6, 2026, nine student leaders from Arkansas Tech University (ATU) participated in the Student Government Day at the State Capitol in Little Rock, Arkansas. This event provided an opportunity for these leaders to engage directly with state officials, including Secretary of State Cole Jester and Arkansas Supreme Court Justice Nicholas Bronni.
Accompanied by faculty members Jaime Land and Kevin Solomon, the ATU students aimed to learn about the workings of Arkansas government and how they can influence their communities. Jared Bynum, a member of SGA, expressed the value of such experiences, stating, “I showed up thinking I was going to find a community, but really I have gotten an opportunity to challenge myself to be a better leader.”
Carla Gutierrez, another SGA member, highlighted the positive impact of their initiatives, saying, “It makes you feel good that you are bringing something to the campus.” This sentiment reflects the broader mission of SGA to support student organizations and enhance campus life.
Current State and Importance
As the SGA gears up for elections and student leaders engage with state officials, the current state of student governance is dynamic and impactful. The involvement of students in such events emphasizes the importance of leadership and advocacy in shaping their educational experience.
Fernando Flores, one of the ATU participants, noted, “Our time there was about learning about the opportunities that Arkansas government holds,” showcasing the educational value of these interactions.
Overall, the activities surrounding the SGA and the participation of student leaders in significant events like Student Government Day underscore the vital role that student governance plays in fostering leadership and community engagement among students.
