Asante Samuel Jr. Re-Signs with Steelers
“Players can start officially signing with new teams on Wednesday, March 11,” noted NFL insider Greg Auman, as the Pittsburgh Steelers make headlines by re-signing cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. to a one-year contract worth $4 million.
Samuel joined the Steelers mid-season in 2025 after recovering from spinal fusion surgery in April. He played a crucial role in the team’s defense, participating in the final six regular season games and one playoff game, where he finished the season with 10 tackles, one pass defended, and one interception.
General manager Omar Khan had expressed interest in retaining both Samuel and teammate James Pierre, emphasizing the importance of keeping key defensive players as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
The NFL free agency period is set to begin on March 11, 2026, and the Steelers are also looking to solidify their quarterback position. There are hopes to bring back Aaron Rodgers as the franchise quarterback for the 2026-27 season.
In addition to their focus on Samuel, the Steelers are reportedly eyeing Bryan Cook, who is projected to be a target in free agency. Cook, a safety who had three interceptions in four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, is expected to command a contract worth approximately $42 million, with $20 million guaranteed.
Asante Samuel Jr. was originally selected 47th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, and his return to the Steelers is seen as a positive step for the team’s defensive strategy moving forward.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the Steelers’ plans for free agency beyond re-signing Samuel, but the upcoming days will be crucial as teams finalize their rosters for the new season.
