Teddy Bridgewater Returns to Detroit Lions
Teddy Bridgewater is officially returning to the Detroit Lions as Jared Goff’s backup, a significant development announced on March 10, 2026. This move marks Bridgewater’s continued involvement in the NFL after a tumultuous few years.
Bridgewater originally signed with the Lions in 2023, where he was tasked with mentoring young receiver Jameson Williams. However, he came out of retirement late in the 2024 season to return to Detroit, only to leave for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2025.
During his time with the Lions, Bridgewater played in just one regular season game and has not started a game since 2022. In fact, he has thrown only 15 passes since that year, highlighting his limited on-field activity.
In his NFL career, Bridgewater has played in a total of 83 games and started 65, throwing for 15,182 yards, 75 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. His experience could be invaluable as he steps back into a backup role.
Last season, Bridgewater played in only four games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, further emphasizing the challenges he has faced in recent years. As he prepares to rejoin the Lions, his role will be crucial in supporting Goff, who remains the starting quarterback.
In addition to Bridgewater’s return, the Lions have also made headlines by re-signing cornerback Rock Ya-Sin to a one-year, $4 million deal. This move indicates the team’s commitment to strengthening their roster.
Bridgewater, who will turn 34 in November 2026, is expected to bring veteran leadership to the Lions. Head coach Dan Campbell praised him, stating, “He’s that type of guy, an unbelievable teammate. He’s a pro. He’s a vet. He handles his business.” This endorsement reflects the respect Bridgewater commands within the organization.
As the Lions gear up for the upcoming season, Bridgewater’s experience and mentorship could play a pivotal role in the development of both the team and its younger players.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further changes to the Lions’ roster or Bridgewater’s specific role in the team’s strategy moving forward.
