Tennis players face threats at tournament in Antalya
Tennis players have become accustomed to receiving abuse and harassment on social media, particularly from bettors. Recently, this troubling trend escalated when Panna Udvardy, currently ranked world No. 95, received threats demanding she lose a match at an upcoming tournament. The threats were alarming, including a message indicating the potential kidnapping of Udvardy’s mother.
In light of these events, the WTA Tour has stated that there was no breach of personal data, but the situation has raised significant concerns regarding player safety. The FBI is now contributing to an investigation into the threatening messages, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
Lucrezia Stefanini, another player who faced similar threats prior to a match, expressed her fears, stating, “I immediately alerted the WTA, which provided me with more security … The entire tournament mobilized to make me feel safe.” This response indicates a growing awareness and urgency to protect players in the wake of such incidents.
Panna Udvardy shared her experience, saying, “At midnight I’m panicking, I’m alone in the hotel. I was really scared, so I forwarded these messages to my parents.” She also noted that the WTA tried to downplay the situation, mentioning a lack of visible extra security measures, which has raised questions about the adequacy of responses to such threats.
As the Arizona Tennis Classic approaches, scheduled for March 10-15, 2026, with a prize pool of $300,000, the safety of players remains a top priority. Observers are keenly watching how the tournament will address these serious concerns.
Panna Udvardy emphasized, “This should not be normalized,” reflecting a sentiment shared by many in the tennis community. The increasing prevalence of threats against players is prompting calls for more robust security measures and support systems.
The situation remains fluid as investigations continue, and details remain unconfirmed regarding the extent of the threats and the measures that will be implemented to ensure player safety during the tournament.
