Texas Women’s Basketball Secures First SEC Tournament Championship
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Texas Women’s Basketball triumphed over South Carolina with a score of 78-61 in the SEC Tournament Championship held in Greenville, S.C. This victory marks a significant milestone for Texas, as it is their first SEC Tournament championship since joining the conference in 2024.
The game began with Texas establishing dominance early on, launching into a 14-0 run that set the tone for the match. Madison Booker led the charge for Texas, scoring a game-high 18 points, while Justice Carlton contributed 15 points, shooting an impressive 6-for-8 from the field. Jordan Lee also made her mark, adding 12 points and successfully making both of her three-point attempts.
Texas’s offensive strategy proved effective, with 51 percent of their points coming from the paint, totaling 40 points in that area alone. The team’s ability to control the game was further highlighted by their defensive efforts, forcing South Carolina to commit ten turnovers throughout the match. With a total of 35 rebounds, Texas showcased their strength on both ends of the court.
Madison Booker, who averaged 20 points on 61% shooting during the tournament, expressed her confidence in the team’s performance, stating, “We belong in the SEC.” This sentiment reflects the team’s growth and adaptation since their transition to the Southeastern Conference.
On the other hand, South Carolina’s head coach, Dawn Staley, acknowledged the challenges her team faced during the game. She remarked, “Our team knows we didn’t play our best basketball, not nearly what we’re capable of doing,” highlighting the pressure exerted by Texas. Staley also noted, “They forced us to play a certain way. I mean, turning the ball over isn’t something that you can start a game like Texas and give them a head start.”
Texas’s victory not only adds to their impressive season record of 31 wins against just three losses but also underscores their resilience, having achieved 14 wins over AP ranked opponents this season, including three against top-five teams. This championship victory was particularly significant for South Carolina, marking their worst loss in an SEC tournament game since 2011.
Looking ahead, Texas Women’s Basketball will now await their seeding on Selection Sunday, scheduled for March 15. The anticipation surrounding their performance in the tournament and the upcoming NCAA tournament will keep fans and analysts eager to see how far this team can go.
As Texas celebrates this historic win, the momentum gained from this championship could prove crucial as they prepare for the challenges that lie ahead in the postseason.
