The recall follows reports of severe injuries, including permanent vision loss, caused by a design flaw in the product’s stopper. Thermos is recalling more than 8 million food jars and bottles due to a defect causing stoppers to forcefully eject.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), three consumers have suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye by an ejected stopper. The recalled models include the Stainless King Food Jars and Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles, with approximately 5.8 million and 2.3 million units affected, respectively.
This issue is particularly alarming as Thermos received 27 injury reports related to these stoppers. The lack of a pressure relief mechanism allows pressure to build up inside the containers—resulting in potentially dangerous situations when consumers open them.
The products were sold from March 2008 through July 2024 at major retailers including Target and Walmart. Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled products immediately and contact Thermos for replacements.
Key details of the recall:
- More than 8 million food jars and bottles recalled.
- Affected models: SK3000 (16 oz), SK3020 (24 oz), SK3010 (40 oz).
- Injuries reported: Three cases of permanent vision loss.
- Retailers involved: Sold at Target and Walmart.
The CPSC emphasizes that consumers should take immediate action—stopping use of these products could prevent further injuries. They recommend contacting Thermos for either a free replacement pressure relief stopper or a complete replacement bottle, depending on the model.
