Gunfire at U.S. Consulate
“The shooting that took place at the U.S. consulate early this morning is an absolutely unacceptable act of violence and intimidation aimed at our American friends and neighbours,” stated Ontario Premier Doug Ford following the incident on March 10, 2026.
Shots were fired at the U.S. consulate in Toronto early Tuesday morning, with two individuals emerging from a white Honda CRV to discharge a handgun at the building. Fortunately, no injuries or damage were reported as a result of the shooting.
The incident is being treated as a national security matter by Canadian police, who have increased security measures at both the U.S. and Israeli consulates in Toronto. The Toronto Police reported evidence of a firearm discharge at the scene, although there was no indication of an immediate threat to public safety at the time of the incident.
This shooting occurred shortly after two synagogues in the greater Toronto area were also hit by gunfire, raising concerns about a potential pattern of targeted violence. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, and details remain unconfirmed.
Premier Doug Ford condemned the act, emphasizing the need for safety and security in the community. “This is just me speaking. I believe that there are sleeper cells all over the world as we know,” he added, highlighting the broader implications of such incidents.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow echoed these sentiments, stating, “This cannot stand. Toronto’s Jewish community has the right to practice their faith and culture and to live their day-to-day lives without fear, intimidation or violence.” Her comments reflect the growing unease within the community amidst rising antisemitic incidents following international conflicts.
Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo reassured the public about the security of the consulate, saying, “It is very secure. The glass and the walls are reinforced and so I don’t believe there was any penetration into the building.” This statement aims to alleviate concerns about the safety of diplomatic missions in the city.
The U.S. State Department is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with local law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing such security threats. As investigations continue, the community remains vigilant in the face of rising tensions.
