Apple Introduces M5 Chips
On March 3, 2026, Apple announced the launch of its latest M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, designed to enhance the performance of its Mac lineup. This development was revealed during a press event at the University at Buffalo, coinciding with the 2026 MAC Wrestling Championships.
The M5 Pro chip features an 18-core CPU, which includes six super cores and twelve performance cores, promising a 30 percent performance boost for pro workloads compared to its predecessor. Meanwhile, the M5 Max boasts an impressive up-to-40-core GPU, significantly enhancing graphics capabilities.
In terms of memory, the M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory with a bandwidth of up to 307GB/s, while the M5 Max can handle up to 128GB with a bandwidth of 614GB/s. This advancement is expected to provide a substantial uplift in performance for users engaged in demanding applications.
Apple’s new chips are built on the company’s Fusion Architecture, which aims to maintain performance and power efficiency while scaling capabilities. Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, stated, “M5 Pro and M5 Max are a monumental leap forward for Apple silicon, leveraging our new Fusion Architecture to scale the capabilities of Apple silicon while preserving its core tenets of performance, power efficiency, and unified memory architecture.”
The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are set to offer significant improvements in graphics performance as well. The M5 Pro delivers a 35 percent graphics uplift in applications utilizing ray tracing, while the M5 Max provides a 20 percent increase in graphics performance compared to the M4 Max.
The new MacBook Pro featuring these M5 chips will be available for pre-order starting March 4, 2026. However, users should note that only the M5 iPad Pro can run the Studio Display XDR at 120Hz, and the entire M1-series Mac lineup, along with Macs equipped with base M2 or M3 chips, will not support ProMotion on the XDR display.
