“The evacuation orders are mostly rural areas, not densely populated,” stated Alex Izaguirre, a spokesperson for the Riverside County Fire Department, as the Springs Fire continues to threaten homes and businesses in Moreno Valley, California.
On April 3, 2026, the fire was reported at approximately 11 a.m. on Gilman Springs Road and has since grown to about 3,500 acres. As of 4 p.m. that same day, the fire was only 5% contained, prompting urgent action from local authorities.
Evacuation orders were swiftly issued for areas on both sides of Gilman Springs Road and the nearby Lake Perris State Recreation Area. An evacuation shelter has been established at Valley View High School, located at 13135 Nason St., to assist those displaced by the flames.
In response to the escalating situation, at least two air tankers and around 30 engines have been deployed to combat the blaze. The Riverside County Fire Department also issued a drift smoke advisory for surrounding areas, as wind gusts reached up to 40 mph, exacerbating the fire’s spread.
As the fire threatens hundreds of homes and businesses, the community remains on high alert. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported thus far, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
In light of the emergency, Sent Out Church announced the cancellation of their event, The Jesus Celebrating, which was scheduled for the evening of April 3. This decision underscores the seriousness of the situation as the community rallies to address the fire.
Gatwiri Mwiti, a local resident, emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating, “Always be prepared. Have emergency awareness information, like a playbook on what you need to do.” Such sentiments resonate deeply as the community faces the challenges posed by wildfires.
Historically, California has seen a significant number of wildfires; through March 2026 alone, approximately 500 wildland fires were reported, burning a total of 2,000 acres. The current Moreno Valley fire adds to this alarming trend.
