The weather has significantly impacted travel at O’Hare and Midway airports in Chicago, Illinois, as a Blizzard Warning is in effect for Boone, DeKalb, and McHenry counties until 1 p.m. today. Areas under this warning are expected to experience whiteout conditions, with snow accumulation ranging from three to five inches and wind gusts reaching as high as 45 mph.
In addition to the Blizzard Warning, a Winter Weather Advisory is in place for several counties, including Cook, DuPage, and Kane, also set to expire at 1 p.m. As of 4:10 a.m., 336 flights have been canceled at O’Hare, while 23 flights at Midway have also been affected.
The storm is anticipated to begin winding down after 8 a.m., although strong winds will continue to blow snow and reduce visibility, posing further challenges for travelers. Illinois Tollway has responded by deploying its full fleet of 196 plows to clear the roads.
According to Illinois Tollway Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse, “Our crews will be working throughout this storm to keep our roads clear and safe so our customers can safely complete their travels.” The Tollway plows are utilizing a brine solution along with road salt to prevent ice from adhering to the pavement.
Weather expert Tracy Butler noted that “the worst part of the storm will impact the morning rush hour,” indicating that commuters should prepare for difficult travel conditions. As the storm progresses, officials are closely monitoring the situation and advising the public to stay updated on travel advisories.
With the combination of snow and strong winds, conditions are expected to remain hazardous throughout the morning. Observers are urging residents to exercise caution if they must travel during this severe weather event.
As the situation develops, more updates will be provided regarding the impact of the storm on travel and safety in the Chicago area.
