New Developments for USPS in Hågat
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced plans to open a new post office in Hågat, proposed to be located at the Old Fire Station. This decision comes as the community has faced challenges since the previous post office was closed in June 2022 due to safety concerns.
The announcement follows a significant ruling by the Supreme Court on February 24, 2026, which determined that the USPS cannot be sued for intentionally not delivering mail. Justice Clarence Thomas stated, “The court did not decide whether all of the landlord’s claims are barred by the ruling, just that the Postal Service can’t be sued for intentionally not delivering the mail.” This ruling has implications for ongoing complaints against the USPS, including 50 complaints submitted by landlord Lebene Konan, who reported not receiving mail for two years.
Community Response and Future Outlook
Del. James Moylan expressed the concerns of Hågat residents, stating, “Hågat residents asked me to look into this matter after the temporary closure was put in place over three years ago and my office intervened.” The community has been without a post office for over three years, and the new proposal aims to address this long-standing issue.
In addition to the new post office plans, the USPS is set to conduct its next Postal Pulse employee survey from March 10 to April 17, 2026. Participation in this survey is voluntary, and individual results will remain confidential. The USPS delivers over 300 million pieces of mail per day and receives approximately 300,000 customer complaints per year alleging misconduct.
Hågat Mayor Kevin Susuico expressed optimism about the situation, saying, “We are confident that the long-awaited resolution of the post office situation will be achieved in the coming months.” However, details regarding the timeline for the opening of the new Hågat post office remain unconfirmed.
As the USPS navigates these developments, the community looks forward to the restoration of postal services and improvements in delivery practices.
