Impact of the Forum
The MSU-IIT Project CLIMA recently convened more than 150 participants for an online forum titled “From Civic Duty to Climate Action: Your Role Matters.” This event, held on March 8, 2026, in celebration of International Women’s Day, highlighted the pressing issues surrounding climate action and the vital role individuals can play.
Keynote Address
Cris Gel Loui A. Arcadio served as the keynote speaker, addressing the audience on the significant threat posed by microplastic pollution. Arcadio emphasized that microplastics are a global environmental challenge that requires immediate attention and action.
Mangroves as Climate Defenders
During the forum, Arcadio referred to mangrove forests as “natural climate defenders,” underscoring their importance in combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. This aligns with the broader goals of environmental protection and ecosystem conservation.
Women’s Leadership in Climate Action
The event also underscored the importance of women’s leadership in climate action. Participants were encouraged to recognize and support the contributions of women in addressing climate-related challenges, a theme that resonates with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5: Gender Equality.
Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals
The forum aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 13: Climate Action, which aims to raise awareness and mobilize community engagement. Additionally, SDG 14: Life Below Water addresses marine pollution, including the issue of microplastics, while SDG 15: Life on Land emphasizes the protection of ecosystems such as mangroves.
Organizational Partnerships
This significant event was organized in partnership with the National Service Training Program (NSTP) and the Gender and Development (GAD) office of MSU-IIT, showcasing a collaborative effort to promote climate action and gender equality.
Future Developments
As discussions around climate action continue, the emphasis on women’s leadership and the fight against microplastic pollution will likely remain central themes in future initiatives. Further developments in this area are anticipated, as communities mobilize to address these critical issues.
