A late spring snowstorm has caused widespread school closures across Colorado on May 6, affecting major districts like Denver Public Schools and Colorado State University.
Classes are canceled at Colorado State University as safety concerns mount due to hazardous travel conditions. Over 120 closings and delays have been reported statewide, impacting not just schools but also nonprofits and local government services.
The storm has brought significant snowfall — forecasts predict 5-8 inches along the I-25 Corridor and up to 12 inches near the foothills. A winter storm warning remains in effect until Wednesday afternoon.
Key school closures include:
- Poudre, Thompson, and Weld RE-4 school districts
- Denver Public Schools
- Littleton Public Schools
- Boulder Valley School District
- Aurora Public Schools
Front Range Community College has canceled in-person classes for the day, though online courses will continue as scheduled. This disruption reflects a broader pattern of unpredictable spring weather in the region.
The state’s largest district, Denver Public Schools, noted that safety was paramount in their decision to cancel classes. Officials have not disclosed when schools might reopen.
In addition to schools, more than 500 flights were delayed at Denver International Airport due to the storm. Xcel Energy reported about 28,166 customers without power as heavy snow weighed down lines.
This late spring snowstorm serves as a reminder of Colorado’s unpredictable weather patterns — a phenomenon that continues to challenge residents every year.
